This one of my favorite times of the year the Tour de France is part sporting event and part travelogue which this year will be presented in high definition and what race it should be. The Versus broadcast team of Phil Leggitt and Paul Sherwen are ready for an epic battle with Lance Armstrong still a favorite after a three year layoff.
Cycling’s dynamic broadcasting duo spoke to me about Armstrong’s return and the challenging layout of this year’s course.
Phil Liggett:” I don’t think it’s going to make any difference – Lance laying off – because at 37, he proved to us in the Giro d’Italia that he was – by the time that race finished – probably the best ride in the race. His form had come great and he took a while to come back after his broken collarbone in Spain and when he started the Giro, he was behind. By the last week, he was very strong. I don’t know if Levi is joining the queue yet but I happily will say in front of him, he was going better than Levi by the last week of the race. I think the riders are scared of Lance right now and not least possibly his own teammate, Alberto Contador. Lance – I guarantee – he’ll be a reckoner in this race. He will not take it lying down. He’s too good an athlete. For the time trial in Monaco, it’s around 15 kilometers. It’s not flat because they’re taking all over the [Grand Prix circuit] there with twists and turns. It’s quite technical. Alberto Contador who recently last weekend rode the time trial championships in Spain, did so to make up the field and to support the organization, but he happened to have won the title as well so he’s now the national champion of Spain. He wanted to prove a point to his own team as well as to the race that he’s ready and he most certainly is. He has proven last weekend in the championships in Spain, and Lance who won the ride well, too. I think the [man alone] would have to be a man who won’t have to worry about as the race unfolds. That will be Fabian Cancellara, the Olympic Time Trial Champion at the moment. He is terrifically on form. He didn’t ride on his national title last week but he did win the road race for the first time in his career. He won’t be a force when he gets to the mountains. He can’t climb like Lance or Alberto, so he may come away from the first day’s racing in Monte Carlo with a [battle league goes] hitting the headlines rather than the battle for the victory in the Tour de France. “
Paul Sherwen:” It would be one thing if Lance said “You know, guys, I’ve been away for three-and-a-half years sitting on my backside, drinking beers.” However, you must never forget that Lance finished up in three marathons in sub-three hours and to finish a marathon in sub-three hours, you’re one of the top 5% of runners in the world. Lance kept his level of fitness extremely high throughout his time away from the sport of professional cycling. I think what Phil said is quite likely. We saw him very competitive already in January in the Tour Down Under, very good in the Amgen Tour in California. If it hadn’t been for the broken collarbone in the Giro d’Italia, I think Lance would’ve been much more of a force to reckon with. However, I think that when you’d bear in mind if he was twelfth overall in the Giro d’Italia, he did work and assist Levi Leipheimer to finish. Well, he finished but I think on the early tough stages of the Giro, I think Lance was well within himself because he didn’t want to push himself too much because he knew that he had to get himself ready for the Tour de France. The most important thing about Team Astana is Lance Armstrong will not leave Alberto Contador. It’s actually Johan Bruyneel because Johan Bruyneel is a guy who’s going to have to make sure that he keeps all of those guys on track and all of those guys working for the same team because a person who cannot see who can beat Team Astana in the Tour de France this year, and that’s going to be – I think it’s an interesting role for Johan, a role that he has never actually been before – three serious contenders to win this fight race overall.”
You really must watch the Versus coverage it is great family viewing. Watch it once you will be hooked it is simply the best sporting event on the planet to watch. It is as I have said before part sporting event and part travelogue which promises to be even better this year in HD.
