Thanksgiving Worksheets,Thanksgiving Math Worksheets:Clive Elementary first-graders in Julie Fitzgerald’s class are studying a science unit on matter to gain an understanding of solids, liquids and gasses. With student teacher Sarah Gross, the first-graders learned about matter through discussions, songs, literature and hands-on explorations. They went on a scavenger hunt outside to identify solids, investigated solid objects to discover which float and sink and examined various liquids to identify their properties. The class read Dr. Seuss’ “Bartholomew and the Oobleck” and made predictions about oobleck, a combination of corn starch, water and food coloring. Students mixed their own batch of oobleck and concluded it had properties of both solids and liquids. The class also made pumpkin bread and discovered what happens when solids and liquids are combined. To better understand gasses, experiments were done with bubbles as well as balloons, baking soda and vinegar. The first-graders also investigated water as a solid, liquid and gas, discovering how juice could turn into a solid Popsicle when frozen and then back into a liquid and gas when melted.
Crestview
Every Tuesday, a mystery reader is invited to read a favorite story to third-graders at Crestview Elementary School. A mystery reader can be a parent, relative or friend of students and staff. Students look forward to hearing the mystery reader’s stories.
The Crestview fifth-grade band performed their first concert Nov. 12 after seven weeks of rehearsals. The musicians enjoyed showing their parents everything they have learned on their instruments. In the upcoming months, students will practice for their performance in the All-District Band Spectacular at Veterans Auditorium Jan. 19.
More than 100 students, parents and staff from Crestview Elementary enjoyed a book fair at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore in West Des Moines on Nov. 7. Jeanne Caldwell and Ruth Dorr performed with the Crestview violin ensemble and the Tiger choir. Student artwork was also on display. Proceeds from sales will be used to purchase books for Crestview students.
