James Arness Brother Peter Graves Dies

March 15, 2010

James Arness Brother Peter Graves Dies:Sad news reaches us this morning of the death of Peter Graves, star of TV’s ‘Mission Impossible’. The popular actor died yesterday outside his home, apparently suffering from a heart attack, just before his 84th birthday. Graves was with his wife of 60 years at the time, according to Sandy Brokaw, his publicist.

Peter Graves was perhaps best known as renowned character Jim Phelps in ‘Mission Impossible’, after first becoming known in the 1950’s series ‘Fury’. He appeared in many films and TV roles over the years and was critically acclaimed for his astounding performance as a Nazi spy in Billy Wilder’s film ‘Stalag 17’.

His popularity received another upsurge in the 1980’s when he sent up his straight character with a masterful comedic performance in the spoof disaster movie, ‘Airplane!’ His career spanned 60 years and in his later life he became a trusted figure in commercials, with many people saying he should go into politics.

His older brother was James Arness, who shot to fame as Marshall Matt Dillon in TV’s ‘Gunsmoke’. Graves changed his name to that of his grandfather’s to avoid confusion with his older sibling. He later said of the Airplane films that he had been worried about taking the role sending up his previously serious image commenting, “I thought I could lose a whole long acting career”.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Graves, who he met in college, and three daughters.

Mission Impossible:Star Peter Graves Dies In L.A.

March 15, 2010

Mission Impossible:Star Peter Graves Dies In L.A.:LOS ANGELES: Actor Peter Graves, who starred in the 1960s TV show “Mission Impossible” and the “Airplane!” movies, died in Los Angeles on Sunday. He was 83.

Graves’ spokesman said the actor died of an apparent heart attack at his house in the coastal suburb of Pacific Palisades. He had returned home after attending a family brunch to celebrate his upcoming birthday on Thursday.

The younger brother of “Gunsmoke” actor Jim Arness, Graves gained widespread recognition in 1967, when he took the role as leader of the “Impossible Missions Force” on popular TV spy drama “Mission: Impossible.”

He portrayed Jim Phelps, who would receive his team’s next mission instructions on a tape that would self-destruct in a puff of smoke. Graves stayed on the U.S. series until it was cancelled in 1973, then later reprised the role in a TV revival from 1988-1990.

Graves is perhaps better known to modern audiences for his deadpan comedic role in 1980 spoof “Airplane!” in which he played the not-so-subtle pedophile pilot of a seemingly doomed jet.

The actor often told a story that he initially wanted to turn down the role, but was talked into it after being convinced by the filmmakers that his dry, deadpan delivery was exactly what was needed to make the spoof work.

Graves appeared in about 130 films and television shows.

In recent years, he hosted U.S. cable TV series, including the A&E Network’s long-running historical series, “Biography.”

Born Peter Aurness on March 18, 1926, in Minneapolis, Graves worked at a local radio station as a teenager and later attended the University of Minnesota, where he majored in drama.

He made his film debut in the 1951 crime drama “Rogue River,” and two years later won acclaim portraying a German spy placed among allied prisoners of war in “Stalag 17.”

In one of his early TV credits, Graves portrayed Jim Newton on the 1950s-era Saturday morning kids’ show “Fury,” about a horse and the boy who loved him.

Graves won a Golden Globe Award in 1971 for his work in “Mission Impossible,” and he and “Biography” won a Emmy Award for outstanding informational series in 1997.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, and three daughters.

Kate Snow On NBC News

March 13, 2010

Kate Snow On NBC News:ABC News anchor Kate Snow is defecting to NBC News, where she will be a correspondent for “Dateline,” NBC announced Friday.

Since 2004, Snow has co-anchored the weekend edition of ABC’s “Good Morning America,” a position viewed as a steppingstone to an assignment on the weekday edition of the morning show. But when “GMA” configured its team late last year after the departure of Diane Sawyer, the job of news anchor went to Juju Chang.

“She’s the whole package,” “Dateline” executive producer David Corvo said of Snow in a statement. “She can cover breaking news, she can interview, she can write, and I’m happy she’ll be doing all that at ‘Dateline.’ ”

Snow joined ABC in 2003 from CNN and covered the 2004 and 2008 presidential campaigns for the network.

Laurie Berkner,Lady Gaga Telephone

March 13, 2010

Laurie Berkner,Lady Gaga Telephone:The Princeton native and Rutgers grad is a superstar for the pint-sized set whose videos can be seen almost hourly on Nick Jr. — an outgrowth of the Nickelodeon cable network — where she’s a regular on “Jack’s Big Music Show” and the channel’s “Move to the Music” episodes that run between shows in lieu of ads.

Berkner, 40, performed with several tri-state area bands over the years, but she has been performing children’s music since 1997. She originally started writing children’s tunes from necessity; a would-be rock star, she supplemented her income by teaching kids’ music classes and playing birthday parties, making up her own tunes for those gigs as she went.

“I realized I could write songs for these kids,” Berkner says. She had such a knack for it that soon she was writing a new song for each class she taught — even while she continued writing for her adult band, Red Onion.

“It actually made it a lot easier to work with them because it was hard to find a song that every kid would like,” she says. “And by me writing, it allowed them to move around the room in a way that I had control over the situation without them even realizing it.”

Berkner jumped from local favorite to national phenomenon when she landed a 15-minute spot on “The Today Show” in 2001. Three years later, her popularity rocketed into the kiddie stratosphere with the arrival of the Noggin (now called Nick Jr.) cable channel.

Berkner’s style eschews revamped nursery rhymes in favor of upbeat songs that come out of the folk music tradition. Inspired by singer-songwriters such as Joni Mitchell and Paul Simon, as well as more contemporary artists like Beck, Berkner has the same aesthetic touchstones as her core audience’s parents.

Berkner, her band in tow, comes back to her home state Saturday to perform two concerts at the Count Basie Theater in Red Bank. She returns in April for more shows at the McCarter Theatre.

“I’ve been lucky that I’ve had a good following out here. .?.?. I can play the nice rooms, and I know that people will come, or I hope they will come,” she says — with more than a dash of humility. She has, after all, headlined Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and even played the White House Easter Egg Roll.

And these aren’t just any old concerts — they’re “birthday party concerts.”

While her TV appearances, DVDs and CDs have made her one of the big success stories of the children’s music revolution, she still fondly remembers her early days of playing at birthday parties — hence the theme of her tour.

“One of the nice things about doing the parties was the intimacy, and I sometimes miss that,” she says.

Her upcoming shows “are still a concert, but there will be a stage set that will help create the feeling of being at a birthday party but with lots of music.”

Accordingly, kids are invited to show up in party hats; a picture of a cake can be downloaded from Berkner’s website, to be colored in and brought to the concert.

Michael-Lynch-This-Womans-Work-Lyrics-300x225This Woman s Work Lyrics 2010:Everyone loved Michael Lynche’s rendition of This Woman’s work in the American Idol Men’s Performance Night.

Lynche’s performance left Kara crying and complimented him saying, “I’ve never cried after hearing something like that. It’s amazing. You were amazing. And it’s so relevant for you, and I can feel it. It’s your life right now. It’s your respect for your wife, what you’ve gone through … and as a woman who doesn’t have a child, I can relate to it so much and it brought me to tears”

Here is the lyrics of This Woman’s Work:

Pray God you can cope.
I stand outside this woman’s work,
This woman’s world.
Ooh, it’s hard on the man,
Now his part is over.
Now starts the craft of the father.

I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.
I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.

I should be crying, but I just can’t let it show.
I should be hoping, but I can’t stop thinking

Of all the things I should’ve said,
That I never said.
All the things we should’ve done,
That we never did.
All the things I should’ve given,
But I didn’t.

Oh, darling, make it go,
Make it go away.

Give me these moments back.
Give them back to me.
Give me that little kiss.
Give me your hand.

(I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.
I know you have a little life in you yet.
I know you have a lot of strength left.)

I should be crying, but I just can’t let it show.
I should be hoping, but I can’t stop thinking

Of all the things we should’ve said,
That were never said.
All the things we should’ve done,
That we never did.
All the things that you needed from me.
All the things that you wanted for me.
All the things that I should’ve given,
But I didn’t.

Oh, darling, make it go away.
Just make it go away now.

A Hollywood Star Corey Haim Dies Of Overdose In Los Angeles

March 11, 2010

A Hollywood Star Corey Haim Dies Of Overdose In Los Angeles:LOS ANGELES: Corey Haim, a Hollywood teen star of the 1980s who became as famous for his struggles with substance abuse as his acting, died in Los Angeles of an apparent prescription drug overdose. He was 38.

Canadian Born Haim, who rose to fame alongside fellow teen star Corey Feldman, was pronounced dead at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center early on Wednesday, police said.

“It was an apparent overdose,” said Sergeant Frank Albarren of the Los Angeles Police Department’s North Hollywood Station, adding the “type of medication” was unknown.

Ed Winter, assistant chief of the Los Angeles County coroner’s office, told local television reporters Haim had been suffering flu-like symptoms and that his mother, who lived with the actor, found him distressed in the early morning hours and called paramedics who took him to the hospital.

He said coroners found some prescription medication in Haim’s apartment but “no illicit drugs.”

“There doesn’t appear to be foul play,” Winter said.

Haim first came to prominence in the 1986 movie “Lucas” alongside Charlie Sheen and Winona Ryder. Then came his biggest hit, “The Lost Boys” with Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric and Feldman, as well as “License to Drive,” also with Feldman.

Haim became known for his on-screen partnership and off-screen friendship with Feldman, who also struggled with drug abuse.

They often were called “The Two Coreys” and the pair even starred in a reality TV series of the same name on U.S. cable television in 2006 but it was canceled before finishing the second season.

After battling a drug habit for years, Haim openly talked about overcoming his addictions around the time he was promoting his reality TV series and said that he had become clean and sober

Oscar Fashion Best And Worst

March 9, 2010

Oscar Fashion Best And Worst:Verdi said few people had a fashion miss this year. But among those that did was Zoë Saldaña.

Verdi said, “Zoe’s dress was fabulous, but a little over-the-top. It looked like my Aunt Connie made that.”

“Early Show” co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez agreed, saying, “The top was nice, but as you go down, you see all those ruffles.”

“It’s very advanced fashion,” Verdi said. “I think it’s hard to make that dress come across as something that women want to wear.”

Rodriguez said, “She she looked like belonged in one of those shows – like a can-can.”

But Schwartz disagreed.

She said, “It’s all about moving toward fashion. I thought she sparkled, I thought she looked different. You might not understand it right now, but this is something that you’ll be seeing all over the country.”

Schwartz said, for her, Kate Winslet’s gray gown was a miss this year.

“I thought she looked stunning and beautiful, but when you can borrow any dress on the planet, this one is very simple. I kind of looked to her to see more glamorous,” she said.

Verdi, who liked Winslet’s look, said the dress seemed to have a 1940s feel, a great fashion Nod Joan Crawford.

Schwartz countered, “Her hair and makeup was stunning and the dress is beautiful, but I would like to see it at a wedding, not on the red carpet.”

As for favorites, Rodriguez said she thought Vera Farmiga’s red ruffled gown was “absolutely stunning.”

Verdi said he loved Jennifer Lopez’s dress “even though it looked like it was made of bubble wrap.”

He said, “I love that it had this new feeling. I love that it felt very modern and it was Sculptural, and it was not just about the drape, which is where a lot of fashion lives.”

Looking at a photo of Lopez’s gown from the back, Verdi added, “I think they pay her separately butt when she signs a deal for a movie.”

Among the men, Verdi said Tom Ford was a standout.

Rodriguez said, “And every guy was wearing Tom Ford.”

Schwartz added, “And if they weren’t, they should have been.”

“He’s like the Oprah of the red carpet in men’s wear,” Verdi said. “Everybody wants a piece of Tom Ford.”

Ford wore a black tux with a white flower in the Lapel.

Verdi said, “He’s super cool, and of course, he’ll get this right.”

Robert Downey Jr.. was also a favorite for Schwartz. His midnight blue tux, paired with sneakers was “something different,” she said.

Downey’s wife, Rodriguez pointed out, had gold accents in her dress, following the evening’s prominent trend of metallic flourishes.
