Lotus chief Mike Gascoyne has technical rebuffed claims that Heikki Kovalainen has never tried to race hard against Mark Webber in the European Grand Prix.
Webber was recovering from the first half of the frustrations of race in Valencia, when he attempted to overtake Kovalainen on the run down to turn twelve.
But the Australian was caught when Kovalainen braked earlier than he expected – and his car was running terrible defeat to flip into the barriers.
Webber himself counted the accident was completely unnecessary, and that Kovalainen is not so much trying to defend against the much faster, Red Bull.
“What’s frustrating that this accident should never have happened,” Webber wrote on his site.
“I understand how anybody that F1 is not a charitable act, to fight for every position, – but not when you have five seconds of the pace and you have one of the fastest cars in the package for you.
“I mean, how long was Heikki will stay in front of me?” Another 15 seconds? He should ask himself whether it is worth it. ”
But Gascoigne rushed to defend his driver, – and believes Webber simply mistaken.
“Heikki was entitled to protection, since it to the post, he told Autosport.” I do not care who you are. End of story. All this team, B-team thing, forget about it.
“If the post, but now you can protect yourself – and if we kept him with us for 40 laps, it is great. If we have spoiled his race, it is quite cool!
“Can we say [Gilles] Villeneuve at the Haram [in 1981] to give four cars passed him? Or is it one of the greatest Grand Prix of all time? If Force India McLaren will allow for simple past, because its faster? Where are you hell? This rally, is not it? ”
Gascoyne believes that Webber was to blame for the crash – made a mistake in the text where the wrong Kovalainen was braking.
“Heikki was going to have big races, he rode on a new team and with these incidents, we could have picked up something – but, unfortunately, been an incident,” he said.
