Uw Madison,Uw Madison Snow Day:The University of Wisconsin-Madison has canceled all classes for Wednesday due to continued inclement weather.

The news was posted to UW-Madison’s website and its Twitter account. Heavy traffic overloaded the university’s website; a stripped-down version of the site was back up as of 8:30 p.m.

In addition to canceling classes, the university asked that all non-essential employees stay home.

“The safety of our students, faculty and staff is paramount,” Chancellor Biddy Martin said in a statement posted online. “I encourage the campus community to stay off the roads on Wednesday. We hope to return to normal university business on Thursday.”

University spokesman John Lucas said that this is the first wide-scale class cancellation due to snow since Dec. 3, 1990. He added that this is the first time that non-essential staff have been asked to stay home in addition to the cancellations since Jan. 26, 1978.

uw madison snow dayCritical campus services will be maintained, according to the university release. These areas include public safety, snow removal, animal care, patient care and University Housing.
