Hines Ward,Heinz Ward:The first NFL game of the 2009 season is in the books, with the Steelers edging the Titans 13-10 in OT. So what can fantasy owners take away from this opening contest? Here are a few observations:
For such a skilled, productive runner, Chris Johnson is a bit too inconsistent. There were times Thursday night when he looked great against a tremendous Pittsburgh “D,” like on his bursts of 32 and 17 yards. However, there were also instances when looked timid and indecisive with the ball, which usually resulted in him getting stuffed for a loss. He finished the game with 15-57-0 rushing, but when you consider that two of his runs went for a combined 49 yards, you realize that it was a pretty poor night for No. 28. He’ll perform better against most other defenses, but this game shows that Johnson still has room for improvement.
Titans WR Kenny Britt could turn out to be a pretty good player. His 4-85-0 line is impressive against a defense of this caliber, and the rookie showed some big-play ability, as well. He should continue to see plenty of playing time and is likely to improve as the season rolls on, so if he’s available in your league, Britt might not be a bad guy to consider adding.
