“Fireworks In Nyc Tonight 2009″
July 4, 2009
The arguable crowning moment of the holiday weekend comes tonight with the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks show, which this year will be over the Hudson River. NY1’s Thalia Patillo filed the following report.
The West Side of Manhattan will light up at 9:20 tonight, when the Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks show will take place over the Hudson River, in honor of the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s voyage up the river that now carries his name.
An estimated two million people will view the fireworks.

“We’re going to have a picnic with our parents and probably wander out to the river see the fireworks,” said local Jonathan Berman.
“I will see many colors falling from the sky,” said first-time viewer Stephanie Ortiz.
More than 40,000 fireworks will explode at a rate of 1,500 each minute, during the nearly half-hour-long display.
They will be set off from six barges between 24th and 50th Streets on the Hudson River.
Organizers say it will be their biggest show yet.
“We moved up to Washington heights just a year ago and it’s nice to learn they’re going to be on the Hudson again,” said local Mike Lindquist. “It can get really crazy on the East River. As we were walking down we were trying to determine if we could see them from here.”
Organizers say the best spot to watch the display will be along the West Side Highway, which at 4:30 p.m. will be closed both ways between 23rd and 57th Streets.
Piers 54 and 84 will also be viewing points with limited access.
